Description

The 4.1.2 and 4.0.5 updates add support for Fusion 7. The Fusion 7 upgrade improves performance, resolves issues, and introduces some UI changes. This article explains the major improvements for Moka5 users, and outlines the key differences between Fusion 6 and Fusion 7.

Performance Enhancements

The 4.1.2 and 4.0.5 updates have the following enhancements:
  • Support for OS X 10.10 (Yosemite)
  • User interface changes to reflect the Yosemite look and feel
  • Improved support for Retina displays
  • Ease-of-use enhancements supporting gestures and different view modes

Known Issues

Default audio device changes on the OS X Yosemite host do not affect the guest

Fusion 7 introduced a problem between guest and host default audio settings. This issue only affects hosts running OS X 10.10 (Yosemite). Previous versions of OS X are not affected.

When you change the default audio device for the Mac host in the host’s Sound menu, the LivePC should play audio through the device you selected. Instead, it plays audio through the original default audio device.

For example: In the host OS, you change the default audio device from the native Mac speakers to a USB device. The host plays audio through the USB device. The guest, however, plays audio through the native Mac speakers when it should also use the USB device.

Workaround: Attach the device to the host first. Then target the guest and open Virtual Machine > Settings > Sound Card. Select the device from the “Output Devices” dropdown. Audio will now play through the device you selected in the Sound Card menu.

When you unplug the device from the host, you will need to select a different audio device from the Sound Card menu. Otherwise, the guest will attempt to play audio through the disconnected device and display an error.

Important: You may need to restart your host before this workaround takes effect.

Key Differences

Fusion 7 has a redesigned user interface that is consistent with Apple’s latest design standards. There is also greater configuration flexibility for Macs with Retina displays, and new options in the “File” menu.

Fusion 7 is optimized for OS X 10.10 (Yosemite)’s look and feel. If you run Fusion 7 on a Mac host with Yosemite, the UI will change to mimic Yosemite’s design standards.

Pre-4.1.2 (Fusion 6):

4.1.2 (Fusion 7):

LivePC Menu Options

In 4.1.2 and 4.0.5 LivePCs, the menu bar has some new features. The options are explained below.

Pre-4.1.2/4.0.5:

4.1.2/4.0.5:

Export to OVF…: VMware’s virtual machine duplication feature. This feature is disabled in Moka5 LivePCs.

Connect to Server…: This feature allows you to connect to VMware’s virtual machine platforms (VMware Workstation, VMware ESX, or VMware vCenter Server).

If an end user knows the hostname and credentials of a VMware server, they can log in and access the server remotely. However, they cannot transfer data out of their LivePC, transfer data between local LivePCs, or access other users’ LivePCs.

Remote server access is a common behavior that is also available on Mac hosts via the Remote Desktop feature.

Graphics Display Calibration

In 4.1.2 and 4.0.5 LivePCs, the Display menu has enhanced features to support Retina displays.

To open this menu, open the Settings toolstrip, click the wrench icon, and click Displays.

Fusion 6:

Fusion 7:

In 4.1.2 and 4.0.5 LivePCs, you can choose different view modes for scaled high resolution displays by clicking the “Scaled high resolution:” dropdown. The behavior of Unity, Full Screen, and Single Window modes is identical to the behavior in Fusion 6.

Sound Card Menu

The sound card menu in 4.1.2 and 4.0.5 LivePCs has more options to specify input and output device behavior.

To open this menu, open the Settings toolstrip, click the wrench icon, and click Sound Card.

Fusion 6:
With Fusion 6, you could turn the virtual machine’s sound card on or off from the Sound Card Menu.

Fusion 7:

Output Device: Choose between the System Default or built-in output device, or modify your System Preferences.

Input Device: Choose between the System Default or built-in microphone, or modify your System Preferences.

USB & Bluetooth Menu

The 4.1.2 and 4.0.5 USB & Bluetooth menu has an option to “Reset All Saved Actions.”

This setting deletes custom behavior profiles for USB and Bluetooth devices. Click the button to restore default connection behavior, which is based on the “Allow USB autoconnect” LivePC policy.

Note: Smart card readers can have inconsistent connection behavior. For more information, read our Knowledge Base article on the topic.
