Creating a better approach.
Stanford researchers began to white board the possibilities of desktop virtualization and found themselves on a visionary quest that culminated in a completely disruptive innovation. In cafés located around the campus, these bright minds met, contemplating the potential and value of providing freedom to the computer user in the form of hardware independence. Their theory: by providing a secure container independent of hardware, IT would be able to provide a secure computing environment on any computer or personal computing device.
Immediately, the team pondered the question of approach: is it better to centralize the execution of virtual machines in a datacenter, or distribute it to the endpoint? After considering the inherent limitations of networks and the plummeting cost of desktop hardware, the answer was clear - local execution provides the best user experience at the lowest cost.
Central management—local execution.
In 2005 this team founded MokaFive and proved out the theory with the first MokaFive Player. It proved to be an early hit with customers. The idea that you could deliver a consistent and standard ‘uniform desktop’ to all end-user personal computing devices, while centrally creating and deploying it, had proven to be a popular and efficient approach.
New layered architecture.
After months in production, customers voiced another perennial desktop management struggle: how could they maintain a standard build, while allowing users to customize their virtual desktops?
The MokaFive team created an architecture with jaw-dropping potential – called Virtual Layers. By layering the desktop stack, Virtual Layers allows IT to maintain the base system layer, while enabling users to add customizations in other layers. And, by providing policies to give IT ultimate control, the problem was solved.
Truly unique desktop management solution.
With these innovations and many other patent-pending technologies, MokaFive represents a truly unique desktop management solution that has transformed the desktop virtualization experience for IT and the computer user.

“You’ve got to respect the fact that if you’ve got bring-your-own laptops for example, there is a personal life on them. You might have your home photos, music on there; you might have your personal records. I’ve got to respect the fact that I can’t look at them, I can’t reference them. Similarly, we need to make sure that we’ve got the corporate system in there … under governance rules and policy I’ve got to make sure the content is appropriate and the system is managed.”
