Last week, Box announced its acquisition of Subspace, a start-up focused on building a SkyNet-like client-side container to secure usage of cloud-based enterprise services such as Box, Office 365, and Salesforce.

With its focus on the enterprise, Box has always been mindful of mitigating the security risks that come with the adoption of a cloud-based service. Thus far, however, Box has been dependent on its ecosystem of mobile security partners to mitigate data loss on mobile devices, with limited ability to secure Box content on desktops and laptops.

As I noted in my blog post about the importance of SaaS app security on the endpoint, in a world in which sensitive enterprise data can be accessed freely from any device with a browser, it’s important to consider how you will protect data that is accessed from and stored by the user, particularly on unmanaged assets (e.g., a cyber café PC, home PC, etc). With its acquisition of Subspace, Box is communicating its intention to enable customers to secure Box content on any device, managed or unmanaged.

Box’s acquisition highlights the importance of next-generation endpoint security in a cloud-driven world and we are excited that our client-side SkyNet container is well-positioned to help enterprises to securely adopt a range of cloud and on-premises services such as Office 365, Box, and SharePoint.
